I've made a note of it but I'm not going to change the data because it moves the result into the previous year which throws the 5N counts out.

Congrats on a great win Paddy.
Yes, if Ireland Grand Slams the 2016 6N, there is a chance that they could overtake the ABs into number one spot in the IRB Rankings. Apart from winning all of their matches, they can only pick up points against England, Scotland, and Wales because Italy and France are currently too low in the rankings. The relative points between each side obviously changes after every match but here is one scenario where they must just do it...
Good Luck!

Good day. Thank you for an absolute great rugby statistics table, we as rugby supporters here in South Africa have endless discussions, and some heated arguments, around this great Super Rugby Table of yours and look forward to the weekly updated details.

I have a question for you on the ranking points system.

With the first week having only two games played, how come the Stormers team have a positive ranking point for their win over a much lower placed team, but the Lions with a win over a higher placed team had a zero ranking point benefit?

Once again, thanks for a great rugby table.
Kind regards
Colin Christie

Hey Colin
Thanks for your email.
The team ranking system on p&g uses the same rules that the IRB use when they rank International teams. Sometimes the results do seem a bit inconsistent until you analyse how it works.
I will try and explain it but it's a little bit complicated - I always have to go back and look at the logic in my program to remember how it works myself :o).
The points 'up for grabs' between two teams on the table is based on the difference between each teams points total going into that match.
To supposedly negate any home advantage, 3 points are added to the home teams total before calculating this.
If the gap between these two totals is more than 10 points and the team with the highest total going into the game wins, then no points are exchanged.
If the lower team wins however, depending on the margin, they could take up to 3 points off the higher placed team.

So in your first example, the Stormers beat the Argies 28-20 at home.
The Stormers going into the match were on 81.27 (+ 3 for home adv) = 84.17 less Jaguares total which was 76.04 = 8.13 (less than 10, so a small number of points will be exchanged as the margin in the result was less than 15).

In the other match, the Lions beat the Sharks 26-19 at home.
The Lions total before the match was 88.21 (+ 3 for home adv) = 91.21 less Sharks total which was 80.06 = 11.15 (greater than 10 so no win points are awarded for the Lions)

Hope this helps!
Cheers.

great site. what does the number on the superugby form column mean?
The number on the form column represents how well each team has played in their past 5 matches. Points are awarded for wins and deducted for losses. Away wins are worth more, home losses cost more and recent form carries more weight than older games. Ultimately the number dictates where the team appears if the table is sorted by pressing on the form heading.

Hi. If the new "3 tries or more than your opponent" SupeRugby bonus point had been applied to past matches, would a losing team have ever received one?
Great question Allan.
I've run a quick query and it looks like this would have only happened twice, both times involving the Brumbies!...
In 2011 they lost to the Reds but scored 4 tries to 1, then in 2012 they lost to the Bulls but somehow scored 5 tries to 2?

That's an interesting one which I haven't looked at before. The win percentage actually comes out at 56.5% across the 3 conferences since SupeRugby started. The South African teams are the most successful following their byes with the Bulls, Sharks, & Stormers all having won 7 out of the 8 games they've played - pretty impressive!
Full analysis can be found here. Cheers.

Anyway, just wondering what ordering you use for the "ALL -vs- ALL ranking matrix"?
It would be easier to understand if it was ordered by current ranking, but it looks like some other ordering is hard-coded?
The ranking matrix isn't sorted Andre. It is designed to be read left-to-right with each country in the same position relative to each other. The number in brackets indicates that teams position at that time. Incidentally, during development I tried colouring each square and sorting it by rank but it looked like a pigs breakfast and in my opinion was much harder to read than the current format. Thanks for your feedback.

I'm not sure where this story came from but in short, they can't! The ranking calcs don't take number of tries into account. To score the maximum ranking points England would have to beat the ABs by 15 points or more... but even then they wouldn't pass SAF in the rankings? Either bad journalism or wishful thinking by Stuart Lancaster.

Unless they've melted it down, I''ve assumed that the ARU still hold the 3N trophy. If (when) AUS win their first Rugby Champoinship, it will replace the 3N in their P&G cabinet.

The points exchange ranking system makes a teams most recent matches influence their current position the most. The Canes had a very strong final 4 games including beating the Crusaders away and the Champion Chiefs at home ergo their late charge up the rankings. Other teams who finished the conference stage higher than the Canes e.g. Reds and Bulls subsequently lost their playoff matches so moved back down the rankings accordingly. As you say, not a perfect system.

Hmmm, it's a tricky one - you could also argue that the Crusaders final "home" game at The Cake Tin against the Canes was an away game... but doing so would throw the whole home/away totals out of whack.

Great site, great stats. Is there anyway to include your search engine in a blog, where the results then point to this site?
If you mean the grey search box(es), then not easily - you'd have to write some sort of form to handle the input and pass it to p&g.
However... most of p&g's result pages can be invoked by adding parameters on the url of the home site www.lassen.co.nz/pickandgo.php or www.lassen.co.nz/s14tab.php etc.
As you mouse over the numerous links in the site, each url will be displayed in the border of the browser (or on the command line if you click on the link) e.g.

Feel free to add any of these as links in your blogs etc
e.g. cutting & pasting the following HTML would link to the Bulls Team history page just as if a user had clicked on the link above:

<a href="http://www.lassen.co.nz/s14det.php?teamnum=9#hrh">Bulls history</a>

Hope this helps.

Interesting question Graham. There is only a small window each season when all teams from a country are playing and not against each other so yes, I think 24 comp points is a record. In 2006, the Kiwi teams won all 5 (also in Round 3), but not with as many bonus points. South African teams won 4/5 in a couple of rounds in 2007 but so far have never managed a clean sweep.

TBH, I don't know how the rules work for some of these trophies. The IRB or the RFUs concerned seem to change them at will, presumably to generate more interest. Because it was a two match series this year, someone decided both games would count and France ended up winning the trophy on points difference (5 points in Dunedin vs 4 points in Wellington). As it turned out, I think it was the right result as France won the first game more convincingly than the ABs won the second.

Yes, the Blues have been decidedly average this year - some of the decision making has been very poor; kicks from hand etc. Actually, it's a pet grievance of mine at the moment - Why do attacking sides opt to kick the ball away so often? Surely they must realise that the chances of a lucky bounce or the opposition dropping it are at best slim? Nine times out of ten all it does is turn good possession over!

I saw your site mentioned with regards the Raeburn Shield. How do you display the Raeburn Shield results?
Cheers,
Ken.

For the uninitiated, the Raeburn Shield is a mythical trophy harking right back to the first recognised rugby union test match played back in 1871 between Scotland and England at Raeburn Place, Scotland (hence the name). The virtual trophy has then passed to the winner (or holder in the event of a draw) down through the ages to the present day. NZ has won the trophy the most times and as at January 2009, currently hold it. For more details see this website or join the facebook group (which might even make the trophy real one day).
You can display the Raeburn Shield results via hidden commands on the pick&go home site URL e.g.

Every result:http://www.lassen.co.nz/pickandgo.php?custom=RS
Results for one country:http://www.lassen.co.nz/pickandgo.php?custom=RS&teama=NZL
One country against another:http://www.lassen.co.nz/pickandgo.php?custom=RS&teama=NZL&teamb=AUS
Northern Hemisphere v Southern Hemisphere:http://www.lassen.co.nz/pickandgo.php?custom=RS&hema=SH&hemb=NH

To see other combinations, just amend the command line. Any questions, please ask.

You can view the ranking snaphots after every round (round 14 includes the play-offs)? It's a points exchange system so yes, losers of play-offs are penalised.

I like your super 14 rankings but I'm surprised that the Crusdaers aren't further ahead over all given that they have won half of the competitions since super rugby started?
Hi Pete. Two reasons I think -
1) A teams current position is influenced predominantly by the previous 4 or 5 games and given their poor finish at the end of last year, the Crusaders had a bit of ground to make up
2) The 10 point margin constraint means that all teams are really destined to stay between 70 and 90 points. Once a team gets near 90, the relative points gained from a win will diminish (and is often zero) and a loss, especially at home, causes them to fall back amongst the rest of the pack very quickly. Of course this is not as apparent in the official IRB rankings because each team isn't playing every other team in a fixed competition format.

As you've probably noticed, the early years of Super 12 were not well organised, including the recording of results. Luckily I managed to get access to old copies of "Rugby News" at The NZ Rugby Museum here in Palmerston North. These covered NZ home games quite well but I still found conflicting reports/totals for overseas fixtures and in some cases had to deduce them from the end-of-season counts. As far as territory/possession stats go, best of luck Christoff!

Updated 16/11/06 - Thanks for the stats John. An explanation of how they've been added is here.

Bonjour Nic. AI is "Autumn International", ST is "Tour to Southern Hemisphere", TO is "Tour". The adv col signifies where the match is played - "Home", "Away", or "Neutral". "Pnts" are explained on the FAQ's page.

Hi Joe - You must enter something in one of the 4 blue boxes on the grey selection panel which is common to all of those teams; in this case Southern Hemisphere "SH" will do it (like this).
For summarised match results, there must always be something in one or more of those blue boxes. Hope this helps.
