The Nations Championship

A wee rant from me before a ball has even been kicked.

The long-awaited, biennial, global competition starts this July. Not one, but two shiny new trophies up for grabs - what could go wrong? I've been hanging out for this comp as I think it has potential to inject some much needed fresh interest into our sport, however having gotten to grips with the format, I must admit to having a couple of small reservations.
My first observation was that the group phase seems an odd contest where teams from the same group, that never actually play each other, are competing for the highest table placings. The points from each group become irrelevant apart from determining which team you will face in the opposing group for your one-off final match in England at the conclusion of the tournament. Having both hemispheres baked into every finals pairing, avoiding the more traditional knockout format, seems somewhat contrived. In fact, if I were being sceptical, I might conclude that the Northen Hemisphere rugby powers, fed up with decades of being World Cup bridesmaids, have influenced the structure of this new comp hoping to swing things back in their favour in their own backyard. Not massively so, but enough to tip the odds - a bit like the 00 on a roulette wheel.

For starters, two tier 2 teams have been bundled into the Southern Hemisphere group, expected to be competitive with the 6 nations tier 1 teams from the get-go. Fiji and Japan currently occupy 9th and 11th places in the World Rankings, mainly courtesy of beating teams below them in the 2nd tier Pacific Nations cup. Japan (not even geographically IN the Southern Hemisphere?!), has a record of 12% wins against the NH. Fiji has been only marginally more successful at 19% wins. As if that wasn't enough of a challenge for a tiny island nation, Fiji are set to play all 3 of their July "home" games up in the UK. Sure, they'll top up their coffers with a good percentage of the gate takings (and rightly so if this really is about growing the game), but it seems a very one-sided scenario when the likes of Scotland will play them "away" at their home ground of Murrayfield. From 11 meetings, Fiji has beaten Scotland 3 times, but only ever back home in Suva where the oppressive heat can make it a tough place to win (ask any number of high profile Super Rugby teams). It might have been interesting seeing the European teams having to visit here.

The final rounds of the competition (6th plays 6th to determine 11th & 12th, 5th plays 5th to determine 9th & 10th... etc), conveniently all located at Twickenham over the weekend of 27th-29th November, will also hand a not insignificant home advantage to the 6N teams (historically, 60% in the 6N, 57% in the Rugby Championship). The new hemisphere trophy will be awarded to the first group accumulating 4 points so the pressure will be on the lower placed teams at the start of the finals weekend...again a huge ask for Fiji and Japan in front of what will most likely be a stadium full of partisan Northern Hemisphere supporters at Twickers. World Rugby has suggested that future finals will be hosted in other countries but unless they start the competition in their autumn and run it into the July of the following year, the finals will always be in the North.

Having said all this though, I'm still excited for this competition and I still expect the SH group to be VERY competitive. Bring it on!

One final thought - I can't help but suspect that these new contests, held every other year between World Cups, will undoubtedly diminish the prestige and 4 year longevity of winning the Webb Ellis trophy. In any sport, you're only as good as your last game which is why fans are realizing that a lengthy run defending the Raeburn Shield carries so much kudos.

Here are the fixtures. I will expand this out to a fully interactive competition table once the tournament starts.

RWC Head-to-Head

Since 1987, there have been 10 Rugby World Cup tournaments. The focus is often on who won each final but across all of those events, excluding minnow bashing, how well have each of the top teams fared against every other?
Note that some potential fixtures e.g. England v Ireland & Wales v Scotland have never even occurred!
There are 3 stats per country matchup: 1st line is number of wins over attempts (drill to full results), the 2nd line is the average score, and 3rd line the total try counts scored.
